Hello and welcome to JustRite’s Friday Challenge! We hope you have enjoyed all of the fabulous samples the design team have given you this week during our September release! All of them are perfect examples for this week’s challenge #057, which is a technique challenge to make a Shabby Chic project!
Wikipedia defines Shabby Chic as a form of design where objects are either chosen for their age and signs of wear and tear or new items which are distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique. At the same time, a soft, minimalistic, and feminine feel is emphasized to differentiate it from regular vintage decor/style; hence the "chic" in the name. Shabby chic items are often heavily painted through the years, with many layers showing through obviously time-worn areas. The style is imitated in faux painting using glaze or by painting then rubbing and sanding away the top coat to show the wood or base coats. Fabrics tend to be cottons and linens, with linen being particularly popular, inspired by old French linens. Whites and worn or bleached-out pastels are favorite colors. Fabric or lace is often stained with tea to give it the look of time worn old fabric. Bleached and faded are terms often applied to the style. So in terms of paper crafting and stamping: think distress inks, sponging, painting, collage/mixing different elements and/or stamp sets, feminine lace and papers with a worn fabric look.
The grand prize for this challenge will be a $50 JustRite Gift Certificate, to spend any way you’d like in our web store!
THREE honorable mention winners will each receive a $25 JustRite Gift Certificate, to spend any way you’d like in our web store!
As I said, you can look back over this week’s blog posts here on the JustRite Inspiration blog, to find tons of wonderful examples from the design team of the shabby chic style and here are a few more samples for you:
I (Sharon Harnist) made a 6-inch scrapbook page of my daughters’ first day of school this year, using Shabby Chic Labels Four:
I used the pretty vintage scroll cologne label from this stamp set as a date label (by covering the center of the label with die cut and punched paper) and colored it with Copic markers, to match the vintage pastel colored alphabet cross-stitch sampler paper. The background papers were die cut with Spellbinders Grand Labels One and adhered to chipboard with magnets on the back, so I can use the page to display on my refrigerator and so it can do double duty by holding some of those important school papers! The edges of the page were sponged with brown ink to age and distress them.
The perfume bottle image from this stamp set was also colored to match the papers, cut out and used as a feminine accent for the page. The ivory chipboard frame was rubbed with antique gold metallic paste, giving it a worn and aged chic look, and a vintage image of sisters holding hands was placed behind the frame. The seam binding was hand-dyed with Copic R22 Various Ink Refill and scrunched so it would dry wrinkled and with an age-worn look. My last bit of shabbiness to add to this page was to print the photo in sepia tones and mat it with ivory cardstock, to resemble an older photograph.
